Up to 78% increase in biomethane output

Background

Biogasclean BE-X technology combines biogenic CO₂, or untreated raw biogas without desulphurisation, with green hydrogen to make carbon-neutral electro-methane (e-methane).  This process significantly increases methane output, by up to 78% with the same feedstock, maximizing the energy value of existing biogas. This CCU technology can be used effectively at biogas plants for CO₂ removal from biogas, which represents about 40% by volume, or to remove CO₂ from any industrial source, such as waste incineration plants and concrete factories.

Objectives

Shell expects the plant at Glansager on the southern part of Denmark to produce 2-3.5 million cubic metres of e-methane

Working with Biogasclean has been a really strong partnership. They are strong on project execution, and they are strong on engineering.

Results

Bio e-fuel does not require any gas pre-treatment or H₂S removal and automatically responds to changes in process flows. It creates additional biomethane from the same amount of feedstock and so increases overall plant efficiency. The solution operates at low pressure and temperature, providing a low operating cost.

Using methanation enables biogas plants to become net-zero or net-positive and unlocks new revenue streams as e-methane can be used for energy storage or processed into fuels for heavy transport. BE-X technology is compatible with existing biogas infrastructure.
